Telepsychology is the use of online tools such as video meetings and email to deliver psychological services. Bisson Psychological Services traditionally relies on in-person sessions to offer psychological services. We use telepsychology tools such as email and text messages to communicate with clients about scheduling appointments and to share documents.
However, the COVID-19 pandemic has lead us to a new kind of telepsychology service: video sessions.
Video sessions are offered using Owl Pratice. Owl Practice is a highly secure online platform that allows online meetings and document sharing. The platform is end-to-end encrypted and boasts many other security features (e.g., PHIPA compliant, Canadian servers).
The use of telepsychology is relatively new and holds many advantages as well as risks. Accessing psychological services by video from your home can offer comfort and convenience, but certain issues around safety and feasibility must be considered. These are discussed in detail with each client at the time of referral and/or onset of services.
On a positive note, we have been using virtual platforms to deliver a wide range of online services since April 2020 and have seen much success. We are looking forward to the continued use of telepsychology. Together with traditional in-person services, we are sure to reach more children and youth in need of support.
